| Lords
of Cricket |
Players,
Personalities and Legends |
The
idea for Lords of Cricket was first
given to Jocelyn Galsworthy by the
Commercial and Membership Manager
of the Adelaide Oval, Terry Davies,
ex-Glamorgan wicketkeeper.
It is very rare for international
players, past and present, to give
of their time so willingly and it
is equally unusual to find a collection
of portraits entirely drawn from
life, when very often photographs
will do.
The personalities who make up this
book were specially chosen by the
artist because, in her estimation,
they had contributed significantly
to the game of cricket with all
its ramifications. Not only are
they masters of their art but wonderful
ambassadors for their sport. The
short biography by Judy Vigors which
accompanies each portrait adds depth
and colour to the subject.
A much acclaimed exhibition of this
collection was held in September
2004 at the House of Lords, supported
by Lord MacLaurin through the Vodafone
Foundation.

Jocelyn
Galsworthy was born on 7th May 1942
in Hampshire. She started painting
professionally some forty years ago
after studying at Winchester College
of Art, The City and Guilds School
of Art in Kennington and furthering
her technique at teaching studios
in Paris, Munich and Granada.
After specialising in portraits, Jocelyn
decided, in 1985, to devote her energies
to painting cricket matches. Having
always loved the game, this seemed
a logical step and one which has given
her enormous pleasure over the years.
She now combines portrait painting
with cricket, landscapes, seascapes,
golf and any other subject for which
she may be commissioned.
She has only recently been commissioned
to paint what may be the last Meet
of the Meynell and South Staffordshire
Hunt at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire.
Apart from painting, Jocelyn loves
gardening, anything French, anything
Australian and the pleasures of the
table.
She also has many godchildren who
keep her in touch with the younger
generation. She is a lifelong member
of Hampshire Cricket, an Honorary
Member of the Lady Taverners, a Trustee
of the Arundel Castle Cricket Foundation
and a candidate for membership of
MCC, even though it will take eighteen
years before her dream comes true!
Jocelyn has given many talks about
her life painting cricket and has
taken part in various television and
radio programmes over the years. |

Judy
Vigors, born 11th April 1941, comes
from Gloucestershire where her father
J. N. Kendall farmed at Brimpsfield,
established the Birdlip and Brimpsfield
Cricket Club in 1934 and was sometime
captain and President until he died.
In
1948, the family moved to Bermuda,
where Judy spent an idyllic childhood,
returning to England ten years later.
Judy is married with one son and
now lives on the Isle of Wight surrounded
by a motley collection of animals.
Horses feature prominently in her
life, especially the speedy variety,
as does St. Paul’s Knightsbridge
Festival Choir with whom she has
sung for the past twenty-six years.
By dint of writing these biographies,
what had been merely lip service
paid to the game of cricket has
now transformed itself, at this
late stage in her life, into a compelling
interest.
Judy was the co-author of Jocelyn’s
last book White Hats and Cricket
Bats which was published in 2000.
